Inclement Weather Q&A - What is a Remote Learning Day?

As we continue into winter, we want to make sure you understand how Cabarrus County Schools will handle any remote learning days during bad weather.

Why would CCS call for a Remote Learning Day?
  • NC law requires schools to provide 1,025 hours of instruction each year. This year, our district calendar included 1,051 hours with 26 extra “banked” hours to cover weather-related delays or closures. Once those banked hours have been used, NC law allows districts to use up to five remote learning days instead of adding in-person makeup days to the calendar.
What Are Remote Learning Days like?
  • How will I know?: Per normal inclement weather procedures, you’ll be notified via ParentSquare, CCS website, social media, and local news of a REMOTE LEARNING DAY.
  • What does asynchronous learning mean?: Students will be expected to work on assignments at home on their own schedule. They will not need to log in on a device for live lessons with a teacher.
  • Where can I find the remote assignments?: Once a decision has been communicated for a remote learning day, parents should visit their school’s webpage for instructions on accessing remote assignments. This will be clearly visible at the top of all school webpages. Elementary school students may have brought home pre-planned remote learning materials from their school and would use these on a remote learning day.
  • How does attendance work?: Students must complete and turn in their remote assignments to be counted present on a remote learning day.
  • Are teachers available on remote learning days?: Teachers are also working remotely and will be available by email or ParentSquare direct messaging during normal school work hours.
  • What if I can't get online or have other problems completing the work?: If your child has trouble completing assignments due to internet, power, or other connection issues, they’ll have up to five days after returning to school from remote learning to complete the assignments and be counted present.
Thank you.
